At a time when fire fighters in Victoria and neighbouring states have rightfully been hailed as heroes during the current bush fire crises, the Member for Noosa Glen Elmes has demanded a complete and urgent refurbishment of the Noosa Heads Fire Station “Following the heavy rain in Noosa on Friday, 20 February an entire section of the ceiling in the kitchen area of the station collapsed due to water penetration. During rain periods water regularly runs through light fittings in the station and now, as a result of the collapse, asbestos has been exposed in the station.
“The station is in such a state of disrepair that there’s no way in the world that the Minister, his Advisers or the bureaucrats that fatten-up the Emergency Services Department would work in such deplorable conditions.
“Since I was elected in 2006 I initially approached Pat Purcell and subsequently the current Minister Neil Roberts about the sad state of maintenance at the Noosa Fire Station. I assured them that all I wanted was a result and that there would be no media grandstanding.
“My last approach to Neil Roberts was in May 2008 but my pleas on behalf of our fire fighters were again ignored.
“After what happened on Friday night, enough is enough. The station must be a safe and healthy work place. Our firies have tried to get essential maintenance done for 10 years and the funds for this urgent work should be made available now.
