ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS

The recent launch of a terrific new website "Koala Diaries" made front page news - this is an excellent web tool for you to be able to enter details of Koala sightings that you and your friends & families may have noted. Click here for the web link.

On this page you will find information, links, tips and updates on environmental issues, including sustainability and climate change.

Water
Water is the world's most precious resource. Water conservation and management are amongst our top priorities. You can do a lot, and at very little cost, to conserve this precious resource:
- repair dripping taps and leaks
- take four minute showers
- use buckets to collect grey water for plants
- do not leave the tap running when brushing your teeth or washing the dishes.

Energy

What you can do:

- Turn your computer equipment and printers off when you are out off the office. Not only do they consume power, they generate heat and make the air-conditioning work harder.
- Let natural light brighten your day. When the sun is shining outside, turn off the lights and let nature light your house or office free of charge!
- Readjust your comfort zones and dress appropriately. Adjust your thermostat to 19-20¢ªC in winter and 25-28¢ªC in summer. Dress for the season - bring extra layers when it is cold outside and wear lighter clothes when it is warm.

Recycling
From Wikipedia: Recycling involves processing used materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production. Recycling is a key component of modern waste management and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" waste hierarchy.......

Some great info from Sunshine Coast Regional Council's website.

Or you could consider preventing waste instead of recycling it - the most environmentally friendly method of all.........

Environmental sustainability

From Wikipedia: Sustainability, in a broad sense, is the capacity to endure. It can be defined as the ability of an ecosystem to maintain ecological processes, functions, biodiversity and productivity into the future. In ecology, the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. For humans it is the potential for long-term maintenance of wellbeing, which in turn depends on the wellbeing of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources.

The word 'sustainability' has become a wide-ranging term that can be applied to almost every facet of life on Earth, from a local to a global scale and over various time periods. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. Invisible chemical cycles redistribute water, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon through the world's living and non-living systems, and have sustained life for millions of years.........

Transport

From Wikipedia: Sustainable transport systems make a positive contribution to the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the communities they serve.

Transport systems exist to provide social and economic connections, and people quickly take up the opportunities offered by increased mobility. The advantages of increased mobility need to be weighed against the environmental, social and economic costs that transport systems pose.....

Climate Change - what is it?

Climate change is the most serious environmental issue facing our world today. Climate change refers to a predicted global temperature rise that is expected to cause dramatic changes to climatic systems around the world in the near future.

Climate change is caused by an increasing amount of greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide and methane) in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Greenhouse gases get their name because they act like a ‘greenhouse’ that traps heat from the sun and keeps the planet warm.

Since the industrial revolution, levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have increased from 280 to 380 parts per million. This increase in greenhouse gases has been primarily caused by people burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas), and increasing pressures on global ecosystems causing deforestation.
The extra greenhouse gases are causing higher average global temperatures, leading to more extreme weather events across the world.

Scientists expect that increased temperatures will also cause melting at the polar ice caps, and raising sea levels.
Brisbane in particular may be at risk from drought, heat waves, dust storms, ‘weather bomb’ storms and floods. These events could lead to damage to coastal and bay ecosystems, infrastructure and people’s health.

Sustainability - what is it?

According to Wikipedia, sustainable development "is a socio-ecological process characterized by the fulfillment of human needs while maintaining the quality of the natural environment indefinitely".
